Personally, I do not like rankings. One interesting teacher, even from a remote college, may transform your life. Think of this list as alternatives to Indian Statistical Institute and Chennai Mathematical Institute's excellent undergraduate programs.

Part of the historical remarks was created using LLM.

Mathematics has once again become a highly sought-after subject in the age of artificial intelligence. Some Indian colleges and universities offer great math programs. This list is largely dependent on the input gathered from our students and our analysis of the research output from the faculty members.

This is not a ranking. The institutes are mentioned alphabetically.

At the final section of this article we also discuss the next steps if you are interested in a research career in mathematical sciences.

Suggestions: Preparing for a research career in Mathematical Science

If you are interested in research in mathematical science, you may want to work toward a PhD Program, We usually suggest students to try for PhD outside India. There are some options inside the country but they are small in number.

  1. Gather Teaching Experience - for example you may do an internship at Cheenta
  2. Gather Research Experience
  3. Prepare for general GRE and subject GRE
  4. A general GRE score of 325+ is great. A subject GRE score of 850+ is quite good.
  5. Keep on exploring research papers of professors in the leading universities in the world. If you find something interesting then you may also write to them.

One comment on “Top 20 Mathematics Departments in Indian Universities in 2024”

  1. Suggestion: I believe that National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar can also be included in the list. The School of Mathematical Sciences in NISER is decent as well, like IISER Mohali and Bhopal. (I'm a student at NISER and I did summer project in IISER Bhopal hence drawing a comparison) I want to say this mainly because NISER is a research institute unlike many private institutions, hence it focuses towards research oriented learning.
